세계인의 축제라 일컬어지는 올림픽이 열리면 그 개최지의 경제와 문화, 역사가 자연스럽게 전 세계에 알려진다. 이번 전시에서는 동계올림픽 개최 도시들의 다양한 공공디자인 정보를 친근한 방법으로 구상하고 기존 개최국들이 자국의 고유성을 어떻게 건강한 지역 문화로 연계했는지 살펴봄으로써, 다가올 2018 평창동계올림픽과 평창의 지역 문화 활성화에 조금이나마 일조하고자 한다.
올림픽 관련 디자인을 중심으로 동계올림픽의 역사 전반을 살펴보는 ‘연대기(Chronicle)’, 포스터와 엠블럼, 모토에 담긴 ‘아이덴티티(Identity)’, 개막식과 폐막식, 경기장, 선수촌 등에서 느낀 올림픽의 ‘경험(Experience)’, 기념품과 지역 특산품 등에 녹아 있는 개최지의 ‘지역성(Regionality)’, 올림픽 경기장의 티켓, 이벤트, 픽토그램 등을 살펴보는 ‘소통(Communication)’, 선수와 관람객, 지역민 들을 위한 다양한 안전장치 등을 살펴보는 ‘안전(Safety)’, 올림픽 이후를 전망해 보는 ‘지속 가능성(Sustainability)’, 전 세계인의 축제인 올림픽을 자료로 재구성하는 ‘기록(Record)’이라는 8가지 주제를 중심으로, 지난 올림픽과 개최지의 자료를 한눈에 볼 수 있는 아카이브 큐레이션 전시이다.
Olympic Winter Games and Local Culture
Whenever the Olympic Games, a global festival, is held, the host country’s economy, culture and history are naturally portrayed to the international community. This exhibit sheds light on how various host cities of the Olympic Winter Games conceived public design and linked it with their unique regional culture. In doing so, the exhibit seeks to add its contribution to the upcoming Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 and to the promotion of the regional culture of PyeongChang.
Eight themes form the exhibit: “Chronicle,” where the history of the Olympic Winter Games is reviewed with a focus on Olympics-related design; “Identity,” where we look at the meaning that the poster, emblems and mottos carry; “Experience,” where we look at what people at the opening and closing ceremonies, the sports arena and the Olympic Village go through; “Regionality,” where we look at how souvenirs and regional specialty items add another meaning to the Olympics; “Communication” where we review how the tickets, events and pictograms used at the Olympics are applied; “Safety,” where we look at the various safety features for athletes, the spectators and local residents; “Sustainability” where we forecast the future post-Olympic Games; and “Record” where the global festival Olympics are recomposed with related materials. This is a curated archive exhibit where visitors can take a sweeping view of Olympics host cities of the past.
